Fraud & AML Awareness · A quick reference for the next transaction.

Return to the lesson

1. Notice the actual concern

Look for urgency, secrecy, impersonation or unusual transaction instructions. Appearance, accent and background are not evidence of wrongdoing.

2. Ask and verify

Use permitted questions and independently known contact details. Do not rely only on caller ID or a familiar voice.

3. Record facts

Capture the time, transaction request, attributed customer statements and actions taken. Separate observations from assumptions.

4. Refer securely

Use approved internal systems and designated fraud or BSA/AML reviewers. Follow your role’s authority and procedures.

5. Keep reporting straight

Do not suggest ways to avoid reporting. In the basic nonexempt example, known same-person cash-in totaling more than $10,000 in one business day is aggregated; do not net cash-out against it.

6. Protect confidentiality

Do not reveal or speculate about a SAR. Appropriate conversations about underlying transactions and protective steps can continue under approved procedures.

A CTR is not an accusation. Smaller transactions alone do not prove structuring. A frontline referral does not establish that a SAR was filed. Never promise that a payment is safe or that money will be recovered.
